Jaco Pastorius - "Stella By Starlight" Bass Solo (Live in 1974)
Here's a great sounding June 1974 recording of Jaco soloing over the famous jazz standard "Stella By Starlight" during a trio gig with Pat Metheny and Bob Moses at "Zircon" in Somerville, Massachusetts. This solo is almost devoid of any signature licks or cliches that were typically present in his solos later on in his career, which is refreshing to hear.

Linc Chamberland - A Place Within

Here's the title track from the underrated jazz guitar monster Linc Chamberland's by now obscure out of print 1977 album "A Place Within". He is joined by Dave Liebman on soprano saxophone, Lyn Christie on upright bass and Bob Leonard on drums. Linc was/is hugely respected in musician's circles for his formidable technique and "sheets of sound" approach to guitar, but despite this he never beca...

Here's a great sounding recording of Jaco soloing over Bob Moses' composition "Metheusla's Blues"( Metheusla was Pat's nickname at the time) from his first period as part of the trio with Metheny and Moses in 1974, more specifically at Zircon in Somerville Massachusetts at an unknown date in the month of June. The bass solo gradually evolves into more of a Bob Moses drum feature with Jaco inser...

Here's a clip of Jaco playing "Chromatic Fantasy" during a gig with Brian Melvin and Jon Davis in the fall of 1986. It's damn near flawlessly executed, actually better than on most of the unissued live WR recordings of it I have heard from the early 80's. In fact, this stands true for all the takes on it I've heard him do from this year, a great example is from one of the solo spots he did duri...

Here's a soundboard recording of a brilliant Allan Holdsworth Trio concert that I recently received in a trade. All those ideas and musical instincts you could pick up! I just love this. Thank you for adding another really special recording of him :)

    Hi MU :) I've never listened fully to this piece until now, and I really enjoyed it. Thank you. Elsewhere, I have seen the small amount of film footage that accompanies the first 2 songs - Continuum and Mysterious Mountain -, and I always laugh when it reaches 0.54 (when someone walks behind Jaco and he chips in with that cheeky long bendy note) :) On cue, I go to the other extreme, and cry (again!) when he plays Mysterious Mountain. One day, I might just pull my daft self together and not do that ;) Jaco's playing can somehow magically provoke an emotional response. For me, that is part of what makes him a genius. I have never uploaded anything on RUclips, but suspect the process is not quick, and I for one am truly grateful you take the time to do it. I've discovered a whole world of Jaco's music I would not otherwise have heard if you hadn't given your time to add it. Thank you :)

    How do you know that was Pat's nickname and that the song was written by Bob Moses? I've tried looking for information about the song (often spelled as Methuselah Blues or some variation of it), but haven't found anything.

    • @musicuniverse1986
      @musicuniverse1986 2 дня назад

      I know Moses jokingly came up with that nickname for Pat because I read about it in an interview online about ten years ago. Sadly I can't find it anywhere now. I usually save interviews like that but I forgot to do so with that one. Regarding your second question I know that it is a Bob Moses composition because it's on his solo record "Home In Motion" which was recorded in 1979. I have the CD. It's also on Spotify. It has another Jaco connection btw because the track prominently features pianist Joanne Brackeen, who Jaco hired for a studio session (along with Pharoah Sanders and Rashid Ali to name a few) in '84 that he threw together but it ended up being shelved since Jaco didn't pay the musicians/studio for the sessions. Anyway, Bob Moses is not only a superb drummer but also a phenomenally talented composer/arranger who has released a host of highly acclaimed albums as a leader. He's on par with Pat and Jaco in that department in my opinion. He's also a wonderful pianist.

    Here's a rare full concert recording of Jaco Pastorius and his WOM Sextet playing at the Beverly Theatre in Beverly Hills California on November the 20th in 1983. Unfortunately the first 3 tracks in particular have some annoying glitches in the form of recurring "popping" sounds that at their worst brings the music to a halt. They were caused by me accidentally leaving the cd-r copy (that I received in a trade back in the summer of 2005) out in the sun on a hot afternoon, sadly before I had ripped the cd and saved the files to a hard drive. My apologies for that. Hopefully you won't find that it is so distracting that it ruins the listening experience of what is a very energetic performance with the band in top form. Full band lineup: Jaco Pastorius - bass, Alex Foster - soprano saxophone, Kenwood Dennard - drums, Don Alias - percussion, Melton Mustafa - trumpet, Mike Stern - guitar.
